Database for empirical research on regional innovation that combines small area (neighborhood) data with industrial design registrations
Alan Engel
Abstract:
Even though industrial design data can make an important contribution to empirical studies of innovation and regional revitalization, suitable spatiotemporal databases are lacking. This research developed neighborhood level census district aggregations that have less than 1% areal variation over the four national censuses from 2000 through 2015. Addresses of 47199, (out of 47290) registrants of industrial designs registered between 2000 and 2017 (441974 designs) were mapped to these aggregated districts. In addition, a correspondence table was also developed that maps local districts of the 2009 and 2014 economic censuses to these neighborhood aggregations. This presentation will show the construction of this database and initial results.
